Only 27% of HPC centres worldwide are already experimenting with quantum computing, adoption of the technology will dramatically accelerate in the next two years. By 2023, 76% of HPC centres worldwide will be using the technology — the majority with an on-premises infrastructure.
By the end of 2023 more than three in four HPC centres worldwide will have already kicked off their quantum computing journey. A fifth of HPC centres will still wait until the next two to five years, while only a minority will not take part in this quantum computing transition.
A three step approach to fully exploit quantum potential
Horizon 1: Gap analysis and quantum solutions development
Horizon 2: Quantum solution design and integration
Horizon 3: Quantum usecase development and implementation
HPC centres play a pivotal role in addressing our most challenging problems, but they are now in an “innovation dilemma”.
Is Quantum computing the answer to this innovation dilemma?
This roadmap includes:
This IDC White Paper is based on the IQM and Atos — State of Quantum Computing in HPC Research Survey conducted by IDC Europe in August 2021. The survey seeks to understand HPC centres’ business and technol- ogy challenges worldwide as well as the attitudes towards quantum computing adoption over the short term:
IQM is the global leader in building quantum computers. IQM provides on-premises quantum computers for supercomputing centres and research labs and offers full access to its hardware. For industrial customers, IQM delivers quantum advantage through a unique application-specific, co-design approach.
IQM’s commercial quantum computers include Finland’s first commercial 50-qubit quantum computer with VTT, IQM-led consortium’s (Q-Exa) HPC quantum accelerator in Germany, and IQM processors will also be used in the first quantum accelerator in Spain. IQM has over 290 employees with offices in Espoo (Finland), Munich (Germany), Madrid (Spain), Paris (France), Singapore, and Palo Alto (CA, US).
Atos is a global leader in digital transformation with 110,000 employees in 73 countries and annual revenue of € 12 billion. European number one in Cloud, Cybersecurity and High-Performance Computing, the Group provides end-to-end Orchestrated Hybrid Cloud, Big Data, Business Applications and Digital Workplace solutions. The Group is the Worldwide Information Technology Partner for the Olympic & Paralympic Games and operates under the brands Atos, Atos|Syntel, and Unify. Atos is a SE (Societas Europaea), listed on the CAC40 Paris stock index.
The purpose of Atos is to help design the future of the information space. Its expertise and services support the development of knowledge, education and research in a multicultural approach and contribute to the development of scientific and technological excellence. Across the world, the Group enables its customers and employees, and members of societies at large to live, work and develop sustainably, in a safe and secure information space.
